Quarto, also known as Quarto Flegreo, is a municipality of 39,955 inhabitants (March 2010) located north-west of Naples, a city from which it is about 20 km. Together with the municipalities of Pozzuoli, Bacoli, Monte di Procida as well as the western districts of Naples, the Quartese territory is an integral part of the Phlegraean Fields in terms of geography and history. The name Quarto derives from the Latin quartus, which identifies an undefined distance, perhaps “fourth mile”, because Quarto rises precisely at the fourth mile of the road, which is now called Campana, as it is also indicated in the civic emblem.
