Montenuovo and Lake Averno: trekking with shared aperitivo
We'll set off from Monte Nuovo, the youngest volcano in the Campi Flegrei, born in 1538 following an eruption that dramatically reshaped the landscape in just a few days. Today its trails wind through lush Mediterranean vegetation, among volcanic slopes and striking views.
From here we'll walk towards Lake Averno, a body of water nestled in an ancient volcanic crater, where nature and myth intertwine. Considered by the ancients to be one of the gateways to the Underworld, it is here that Virgil, in the Aeneid, places Aeneas's descent into the realm of the dead, guided by the Cumaean Sibyl.
We'll stop near the Temple of Apollo for an enjoyable shared picnic: everyone will bring something to eat or drink to share with the group.
This will be a hike to experience slowly, letting ourselves be carried by the poetry and mysterious stories of these places.
