Pozzuoli Centro Storico
Pozzuoli port
The Greeks probably founded the ancient Puteoli under the name of “Dicearchia”, or the city of good government. In Roman times Pozzuoli was one of the most populated cities of the empire. For more than three centuries, it was the main port in the Mediterranean, a place of trade and cultural exchanges between all the populations of the Mare Nostrum. In the Middle Ages, it was an important center, a leisure site for the Kings of Naples, and today it is the most populous city in the area. The many Roman ruins are spectators of the city’s millenary history. Here was born Sofia Villani Scicolone, better known as Sophia Loren!
