The Baths of Baia
The Archaeological Park of the Baths of Baia is the emblem of imperial Baia, a vacation and luxury destination
unrivaled in Ancient Rome. Here, emperors, senators, and patricians spent their holidays,
surrounded by breathtaking views of the Gulf and extraordinary natural hydrothermal resources.
Visiting Baia means taking a journey back in time to discover the “dolce vita” of the Roman elite.
From Private Villas to Thermal Complexes
Originally, the area was occupied by sumptuous private maritime villas, such as the “Villa dell’Ambulatio” and the “Villa della Sosandra”.
These residences were built on multiple levels along the hillside, featuring frescoes, precious marble floors, elegant porticos
and even private thermal areas. The luxury of Baia was such that it was criticized by many ancient authors as a symbol of debauchery.
During the imperial era, the villas were progressively transformed into large public thermal baths,
capable of hosting hundreds of visitors at once and making full use of the natural steam springs.
