Montenuovo

Monte Nuovo

Monte Nuovo is the green embrace of Europe’s youngest volcano.

What would you do if the ground beneath your feet decided to change the landscape forever? That’s exactly what happened in Pozzuoli in September 1538. For days, nature sent unsettling signals: continuous earthquakes, the sea suddenly receding from the shoreline, and fishermen watching in disbelief as schools of dead fish were left stranded on the emerged beach.

Then, on the night between September 29 and 30, the final explosion: amid flames and showers of ash, the earth rose up, giving birth to Monte Nuovo. Today, centuries later, that primordial catastrophe has transformed into an oasis of peace and unique biodiversity in the heart of the Campi Flegrei.

A kingdom of biodiversity: the true Mediterranean Scrubland

Walking along the trails, you’ll be enveloped by the intense fragrances of the most authentic Mediterranean scrubland: the pungent aroma of myrtle and mastic tree blends with the scent of broom, which in spring colors the volcano’s slopes with a dazzling yellow.

The landscape is dominated by typical plants like holm oak and heather, which have found their perfect habitat in this volcanic soil. As you approach the heart of the crater, the air becomes humid and the vegetation changes, offering a constantly evolving botanical spectacle.

From the crater to the gates of Hades: the descent on foot to Lake Avernus

But the adventure doesn’t end at the summit. For travelers who love combining trekking with mythology, Monte Nuovo conceals a timeless route: the descent on foot to Lake Avernus.

After admiring the crater from above, you can take a path that gently descends along the western slope of the mountain. Step by step, you’ll leave the volcano behind to reach, directly on foot, the most mysterious body of water in antiquity. It’s a true “descent into the underworld” in modern form: where Greek and Roman poets—like Homer and Virgil—placed the entrance to the Afterlife, today you’ll find a rejuvenating trail that leads you straight to the lake’s shores, combining in a single journey the power of geology and the fascination of mythology.

The terrace over the Gulf

Before starting the descent, stop and look at the horizon. From the mountain’s summit, your gaze opens to an extraordinary panoramic embrace: Capo Miseno and the island of Procida stand out blue against the sea, offering one of the most beautiful postcards in all of Campania.
