Lake Avernus
Lake Avernus is a unique volcanic crater lake where myth, history, and nature intertwine.
For ancient poets, including Virgil, it represented the Gate to the Underworld, the entrance to the realm of the dead.
Today, it is instead a peaceful Phlegraean oasis, ideal for hiking, food and wine tours, and relaxation.
From the Mythical Gate to the Underworld to the Phlegraean Oasis
The name comes from the Greek “áornos” (without birds), referring to the gaseous fumes that once hung over the lake and gave it an eerie atmosphere.
According to the Aeneid, Aeneas came here to meet the Sibyl and descend into the Underworld. Not surprisingly, its shores were linked to the cult of the Cumaean Sibyl.
During the reign of Augustus, the architect Agrippa transformed Avernus into a naval base, connecting it to Portus Iulius via an artificial canal.
Also famous is the Cave of Cocceius, a Roman tunnel that connected the lake to Cumae, now a natural refuge for rare bat colonies.
The imposing ruin known as the Temple of Apollo was actually a large Roman thermal complex with a 38-meter dome.
Nature and Biodiversity
Today, Lake Avernus is a natural paradise, surrounded by holm oaks, oaks, reed beds, and vineyards.
The local fauna includes wild ducks, coots, mallards, hedgehogs, and small reptiles.
In spring, the spectacle of fireflies makes evening walks around the lake truly magical.
