Cathedral of San Procolo: The Hidden Temple of Augustus
The Cathedral of San Procolo is one of the most evocative archaeological sites in Pozzuoli,
as it incorporates the ancient Temple of Augustus within its structure.
Here, Roman history and Christian faith coexist in a dialogue unique in the world.
The Cathedral: Symbol of Transformation
It stands on the ancient acropolis of the Rione Terra, where the main Roman place of worship once towered.
In 1631, Bishop Martín de León y Cárdenas decided not to demolish the temple,
but to integrate it into the basilica.
The perimeter marble columns were incorporated as load-bearing pillars of the new structure.
The Unexpected Discovery
For centuries the temple remained hidden until 1964, when a fire revealed
the integrity of the Roman roof, brought to light thanks to archaeologist Amedeo Maiuri.
Since then the Cathedral has been considered an architectural fusion unique in the world.
Artistic Details and Mysteries
- Artemisia Gentileschi: the Cathedral was among the first to display works by the celebrated Baroque artist.
- Clues to the cult of Apollo: sculptural fragments and inscriptions suggest an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo.
- Visitor experience: in addition to the basilica, the alleys and views of the Rione Terra are worth exploring.
